A Protest

When driving past the main gate to 19 Wing we noticed a small gathering of quiet protesters adorned with Anti War signs and get out of Afghanistan signs across the street. We guessed there might be as many as 25 - 30 newdems.the same old same old. Smile and wave.

"One on One"

I watched Peter Mansbridge interview with his Highness Prince Karim (born December 13, 1936) is the current (49th) Imām of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. He has held the title since July 11, 1957. The Aga Khan is very gentle soft spoken person who is believed to be a direct descendant of Mohammed by the Ismaili community. Wikipedia offers much more background if you are interested.

Although I was interrupted a couple of times during the interview, I did come away with some pearls of wisdom which the Aga Khan shared without any hesitation. When asked about why he liked visiting Canada. He said words to the effect that Canada was a good example of a pluralistic society, a global asset. He was here establishing the Aga Khan Foundation Centre.

On the Question of Canada in Afghanistan, his response was about 2 speeds of change happening in that Country. The one side of rapid changes whilst the other rural area's where there was so much hope only a few years ago has not seen any changes and therefore leads to a continued situation of people who do not even have the basics.

When asked about Canada's role in Afghanistan the response was clear.Canada should stay although the situation is very difficult but very necessary. The Aga Khan spoke about the need for governments to provide enabling environments where people can achieve change. On this topic I agree.

When asked about the US attack on Iraq, on Bhagdad specifically he posed the reverse by asking a simple question How would the Christian World react to the bombing of Rome.

It has been just over 20 years since I had the Honour of attending the ground breaking ceremony for the Jatmatkhana in Burnaby. I along with several hundreds of others was received by His Highness the Imam and her Highness the Begum (since divorced). Through my Ismaili friends I learned that like Judea Christian religions the Muslims have many different sects. Memoirs of the Aga Khan has one chapter that explains to people outside the Ismaili community what they are all about including their beliefs. If you can get a copy , I highly recommend it.

Meanspirited manipulation during Municipal Elections.

The November 27th 2006 By-elections dropped by PMSH.
The Leadership of the federal Liberals not withstanding; is an insult to the honourable playing of the political game.

This has niggled at me ever since the announcement, it is a meanspirited move to the voters of London Ontario who will be chosing not only a new Mayor and council but also an new M.P. and one that may not last 1 year.

It smacks of the old SOCRED party who in May 1980 dropped the writ of a provincial election right smack dab in the middle of a federal election. In those days a federal election ran 60+ days with a 28 day BC campaign , it wrecked havoc on our Liberals who were fighting in the trenches to hold on federally and we could only run 5 Candidates Provincially in 3 ridings because 2 of the ridings were dual member. It was a nightmare and voters were insulted, angry and very petulant at the polls.

History, what good is it for. Not for learning. History begins the day you are elected, just ask Harper and his horrids.

Where's the Women.

I would love to see the Liberal Party run with a Woman Candidate in the London riding that Joe Fontana vacated for municipal politics.

Elizabeth May for the Greens is posed to make her statement, she did help Rick Mercer to cut down a tree, with a chainsaw which gave her some power. Zoom, zoom.

Diane Hackett returns from abroad to relaunch her political life as the Conservative Candidate. From what I've heard and read, she will be a formidable campaigner.

If there was any Leadership Candidate who I beleive would be a fiesty challenger, it would be Martha Hall-Findlay not Gerard Kennedy who is being pressured to run.

4-3 Yipeeeeeee !

Another last minute Canuck goal wins, happy is the couch coach who is now surfing channels with the remote in his hand.
:) letting the new names wrap around his grey matter "Lukas Kraijeck" (sp) absorbing the importance of the season ahead.
I learn it from osmosis, and using it as a topic in this post helps .It is the compromise of being married all these many years.

3-2 with 7/10th of a second remaining.

The Canucks won tonight.

The couch coach that hangs out in front of my TV when ever the Vancouver Canucks play hockey was lamenting the fact that his favourite team couldn't even score with all the shots on goal earlier in the game.

This is reality TV.

Another one of the FWD Emails.

I have copied this email in it's entirety. The Host of the Ladies Luncheon I attended on Monday sent this around today. She came to Canada from South Africa 15 years ago, originally born in Rhodesia now Zimbabwe. A white African Jewess, who is the sweetest person I have ever met, she apologies at the beginning of the email saying

I am not prejudiced but this, I do believe in.

THREE CHEERS FOR AUSTRALIA

I wish the leaders of our country would take a stand. like Australia. Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks. A day later a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard. Howard and his ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted thatsome radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state and its laws were made by parliament. "If those are not your values, if you want a coun try which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you," he said on natioal television"I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia, one the Australian law and another the Islamic law, that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country, which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option," Costello said.Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he said those with dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the other country. Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off". "Basically, people who don't want to be Australians, and they don't want to live by Australian values and understand them, well then they can basically clear off," he said Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on> Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques.
AMERICA and Canada..... ARE YOU LISTENING?
Quote:IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patrotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Australia. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to und er stand. This idea of Australia being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. AsAustralians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who> have sought freedom. We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language! Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push but a fact because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, Because God is part of our culture. We will accept your beliefs and will not question why, all we ask is that you accept ours and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us. If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like " A Fair Go", then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. By all means keep your culture, but do not force it on others.

This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, "THE RIGHT TO LEAVE". If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.

Conservative Caucus removes Garth Turner.

Freedom of speech is a right as long as you aren't an elected member of Parliament. The message is clear, if you blog don't expect to influence the law makers, at least not in the present parliament.

I couldn't resist sharing this.

Excerpt:
Interesting how the prevailing belief was that women were ill suited for participation in politics because we were seen as the emotional and irrational sex.
After watching the Liberal Leadership debates yesterday, I think that it is male politicians who are the emotional and irrational ones.
Pitted against each other they cannot help but compete in cockfights.

JOHN GRAY:A Liberal exhibitionCBC News Viewpoint
Ooctober 16, 2006 More from John Gray

It sounds like I didn't miss much by not watching yesterdays debate. Allegations against Volpe, a challenge to Rae as per yesterday, the analysis of each of the contenders, there is nothing profound that hasn't been written before.

I surfed through a few of the blog sites last night to see what a few of the camps were sending from their blackberry wireless, and it was just a big YAWN.

Last week I accepted an invite to a Ladies Lunch Noon today where I expect to be drilled over the corruption of the Liberal Party, particularly Mi's comments on Isreal. It is being hosted by a vegan, so all the meat will be political.

Oy !

Ottawa CP byline Joan Bryden

Dion, Kennedy join Ignatieff push to disqualify most Rae delegates in B.C.
I just do not know what to think when I read articles in the MSM about the challenges in BC. Try explaining what is happening with this Liberal Leadership DSM process to total neophytes and my neighbours is quite simple. I don't tell them much I just nod as they ask me what the heck it is all about.
Being a Liberal makes me a target of hostile comments from the lefties and the righties who are so morally bound to the high road HA! I do live in a very polarized riding where voters vote against, not for .
The loud silence radiating from LPCBC is unnerving, as far as I can tell, a few delegates have been congratulated by their Campaigns on being elected but not all have been notified.
A slight correction, there was an email from LPCBC today with a Press Release
Harper Re-Announces Liberal Gateway Plan, Dilutes Funding
Issue
On October 21st, 2005 the then Liberal Government announced $590 million over five years for Pacific Gateway Projects:http://www.tc.gc.ca/mediaroom/releases/nat/2005/05-gc013e.htm
On October 11th 2006 Stephen Harper announced $591 million over eight years forPacific Gateway Projects:
* This is the same funding commitment that was provided for by the former Liberalgovernment * However, Stephen Harper has diluted the funding by spreading it over 8 yearsinstead of the five they promised in their own platform. * Essentially the Prime Minister has flown in to BC to deliver no news, and no newmoney. Why even bother? * This is eerily similar to yesterday's announcement in BC that he would introduce a Clean Air Act in Parliament next week - something a Liberal government already introduced in Parliament . in 1971! *
Maybe next week Mr. Harper will fly to BC and offer us a railroad if we consider joining confederation.
1971 that was....... let me remember................... The Year Mike Pearson Died on Christmas day . And the birth of Justin Trudeau and I don't recall the Clean Air Act but then I'm told the memory is the first to go.
I do know that BC has had a railway for more than 100 years. It is falling apart and causing unending environmental problems, is that what the Clean Air Act is all about.?
:) LOL
Back to BC and the results, all in good time!

Liberals, Leaders!

I had some time today to surf around the liblogs and read what others are commenting on. Often over the past couple of months I have noticed a preponderance of criticism and very little constructive comment. I live a busy life filled with more than current events, meals and entertainment so it does matter to me how I spend my time..

When I first became active in politics, I used to comment on how the Liberal party was comprised of Lawyers and Academics, they were the verbal ones at conferences and national meetings. There were some very interesting debates on the floors of conventions, if you were a quick study you could pick up exactly where the discussion was heading. The Liberal Party has some of the most incredible people and some not so.

Not only are there Lawyers, Academics, with the information age and the use of cyberspace, the internet and litespeed communications, the level of debate has gone down with the irresponsible comments made behind the title of Anonymous. Many commenters have the luxury of sitting infront of their monitors and keyboards for hours on end and on a daily basis.Like so many other things this can be an asset and a liability. Pulling apart the turn of a phrase or dissecting parts of sentences made by any Leadership candidate has become a game sport. What does any of it really matter.

The use of membership as a hammer, a threat or even as a bullying tactic because you disagree with a comment or dislike the innuendo you assume was meant by a simple act, for example Prime Minister Chretien shaking hands with the President of Lebanon a few years ago, had one member of VIN so outraged that she quit the Liberal Party. It was a reactionary thing which baffled me at the time and over the years as I have come to know her, I realize that this is a normal behaviour pattern. She is an on again off again card carrying member of the LPC. I never know what will trigger the next "I Quit". Then there are the YLC members who quit because of the people around Paul Martin, but they are back again because we are in a leadership race. It is akin to bathroom humour, up and down like toilet seats. To make your quitting a public scene is silliness; and oh...... so kindergarten. If you don't like the heat, get out of the kitchen. When you're done, you are done. Let your membership lapse and go do something else.If you do stay... remind yourself Don't get Mad, get Even!

I am a Michael Ignatieff supporter. I know this world of ours is a very complex and complicated place . I do not expect instant fixes from the Leadership race.I have been impressed by Mi because he does not have all the political baggage attached to him that I feel the others have. I appreciate that he has valued his being a Canadian in other parts of the world where he has worked and lived. Being a Canadian on other continents is a huge plus for all of us who pride ourselves at being Canadian. I do not understand why so many commenters think you have to stay in Canada to know the country. So many of us have never travelled through all our timezones, who are we to be so critical.

I am awaiting the results of my ridings mail in ballot, reliable sources tell me that Mi topped the votes here. That's a good thing.

So yer Canadian eh!

And you didn't even know that you weren't.

"Tories unfairly shutting the door on war brides children"
Ottawa's actions arbitrarily strip thousands of people of citizenship.
The Vancouver Sun ,
Friday October 6th
by Daphne Bramham.

Growing up as a dependent of a F/L in the RCAF this column really upset me. I know many familys who while serving for Canada overseas gave birth to children who the DND accepted as Canadians. I really appreciate the fact the it has been made public through Daphne Bramhams Column at the same time I feel a deep sense shame that it is the government of Canada who states that "Canada should be able to strip the citizenship of any one, anytime, and the governement should not even need to tell those individuals that they may suddenly be stateless.

Everybody for..............

NOT "anybody but." A quote from Stephane Dion in a Television Interview this morning, commenting on a telephone conversation he had with Michael Ignatieff.

I am impressed with all the Candidates for leader of our Liberal Party today, and I can only hope it continues throughout the next 2 months. These 8 men and Woman are class acts. I include Volpe as a class act because I am in a generous mood and really feel good being a liberal.

Scanning through some of the blogs, and the MSM articles, I pick up on 2 different vibes.

The Commenters to Blogs, listen to yourselves, then listen to the Leadership candidates. Every time you comment negatively about any of the Leadership candidates it not only reflects on you, it also reflects on all Liberals. The CPC and the NDP are indeed, as some have stated; keeping a dosier on liberals generally and Leadership candidates specifically. The real battle will be the next general election.

Ignatieff preaches civility in Liberal Leadership fight, headlines in the MSM are directed not only to the Canadian public but to the newly elected delegates who will be representing us in Montreal. It is apparent that the Leaders are keeping in touch with each other therefore it is imperative that their 'camps' take the high road with their chosen candidates and continue to build towards winning the next election.

It is Canada's future that is at stake here. It is our future.

Keep smiling.

119 over 63 and that's a good thing! Low Blood Pressure.

I gave another unit of blood to the Canadian Blood Services this week. My goal is to give as much if not more than I have given to the LPC. This was my 54th and I had to interrupt several years out because of pregancy, lactating, once for acupunture, another time because of surgery. If you are a Blood donor you'll understand. If you are not a Blood Donor, I recommend you locate the nearest Canadian Blood Services Clinic donate a unit then get out and Vote.

That done, I've voted and mailed in the ballot, which had to be post marked no later than 5 pm today,October 4th they are counted in Vancouver Office of the LPC.

I always feel great after donating Blood, and it feels just as good sending off the Leadership ballot.

I'll be checking out all the real bloggers who have made predictions and percentages over the next few days but I won't know what the results are in my own riding until this time next week.

I like the idea of one member one vote and if my riding along with the others here in BC prove that it is effective then the LPC would be smart to consider it Canada wide the next time. There is much to clean up and knowing the rules clearly would be a giant step forward...... I've already bitched about that.

Politics must be FUN.
It is too important to take to seriously.
Always, expect the unexpected, because it will always happen.
Keep smiling!
Most importantly

GOTV!

Friday ! Not another one.

What to do, what to do? Who to vote for, Who to vote for?

Vancouver Island North has a mail in ballot, it arrived in mail boxes on Monday and Tuesday here in the southern end of the riding GOK's if everyone up at the northern reaches has theirs by now.

First off, I did not fill in a Form 6 as I have been to the 3 previous Leadership conventions and I am way to cynical & jaded besides it is time some of the locals who have worked in this riding get elected as delegates. I did sign up and renew several people before the July 4th deadline at that time thinking I might want to go in the end but wouldn't be able to if didn't get my own butt covered. As I've said before I know more than I ever wanted to know.

The Ballot has 117 names on it of which 32 live in the riding. Our riding list is around 133 The candidate delegate breakdown goes like this .

Volpe 14 ( from away) Kennedy 19 ( all his organisers from away)
MHF 2 ( from away) HF 1 ( poor soul) Dryden 13 ( 11 from away 2 locals) Rae 26 (22 from away 4 locals) Dion 18 (12 locals 6 from away) Ignatieff 21 (14 local 7 from away) Brison 1 (local) Undeclared 2 (local). You can see by these numbers that only Mi and Dion have worked this riding.

What I have learned this week is that not only has the LPCBC waived our ridings motion to not allow foreigners on our delegation lists , but that these slates are being run in multiple ridings.

Only in BC ?

I have spent much time on the telephone and in person explaining to my "vote" What to do! and who to vote for. they thought that it would be just a vote for me and I'm not on the ballot, this is a shock to new liberals who do not understand the slate system in a riding that has traditionally voted for delegates to represent them. The thing here is getting those ballots mailed before the Friday deadline and more importantly will they arrive at LPCBC HQ in time for the count on October 4th.

There has been absolutely no explaination of how they will let the membership know who actually gets elected to represent them in Montreal. It may be that only those elected will be informed.

Who knows?

Five ways the "F" word has influenced moi!

http://canadiancerberus.blogspot.com/tagged me on this campaign to come up with 5 things feminism has done for me.

I should feel somewhat uncomfortable with the "F" word now that we are in the 21st Century or at least an article in the Fall Issue of Chatelaine magazine suggests that young women do not use that word in their daily vocabulary after all they don't burn their Bra's either these days.

I am a full figured women so I don't burn my Bra's either. Nada Jane Russell .
I am a Feminist.

Now that it's out herefollows my list:It is to important to take to seriously.

1. CHOICES:

Raised with a Catholic education in the separate school system of Alberta in a RCAF Family. The Sister's of St Joe's and the FCJ taught us the most important things in life were the Arts, Home Economics and Textiles. Once learned, the next step was to find and Marry a good Catholic boy and fill up the pews of the church. back in those days my parents were what they called a mixed marriage, protestant father and catholic mother. I questioned everything about the Dogma of the Church and was continuously told to "Wait for Judgement day" but I was also taught in my catechism that God gave us each an intellect and a will. I chose to use my intellect ( will) to make my own decisions.Married a non catholic, had one son, joined the Liberal Party.

2. TOLERANCE:

In the earlier years of the BCWLC there was a very strong group of women who were a major influence in who I am today. The newly formed Ministry of State for the Status of Women, was shadowed by a group called N.A.C. the National Action Committee on the Status of Women. the BCWLC was one of several hundred member organizations they claimed to represent. Joan Wallace was on the Board of CACSW and an active member of the BCWLC she was the woman who ran for the Liberal Nomination in Richmond South Delta 1978 my first experience at a nomination meeting.

During that time I also became very active with the Council of Canadian Unity, and Chaired the BC Canada Week Committee . I received earfuls from veterans across the province who were outraged with the Maple leaf flag. Just mention "Canada Post" and the voice at the end of the line yelled back "What are you a Trudeauite?" Trudeau was blamed for everything that didn't work to some peoples satisfaction.

3. QUALITY of LIFE:

Being a Feminist is not exclusive to women, I know many men that I would be honoured with that label as well. "A Man of Quality is not threatened by a woman for Equality." My home is an equal opportunity household, we have no gender split on cleaning toilets, making beds. taking out the garbage, driving a truck, splitting wood or fly fishing. If it needs to get done it gets done.it was my Father who taught me "if you see a job that needs doing, don't wait for someone else to come along and do it, the helping hand is at the end of your own arm". All the old cliche's work it's your choice.

4. ACCEPTANCE:

I was a Political Assistant to a Cabinet Minister where my job was to liason with Women, Youth, and Ethnic groups around the lower mainland. I became a regular at multicultural events, Race Relation Conferences. Meetings at the CACSW Offices.

The Youth grew up and lived happily everafter... seriously.

I learned the sensitivity of my Gay friends who outed to me, I really admired/ and still do a cousin who Co Chaired the Gay and Lesbian Committee for the United Church of Canada during those years that Church was debating the inclusivity and ordination of Gay/Lesbian Ministers.I agree with SSM and the right for adoption of children.

5. EMPOWERMENT:
I love that Fathers have been empowered to parent not just 'babysit'.
I love that young women can and do go out into that big world and use the opportunites made available to them by the preceding generation of women.
I want my young neices to know there is more to the world than their little universe. I want them to exercise their rights to get out and vote, to travel and experience history, the present and our future.

That wasn't so bad, I have mellowed during the past few years because Life is way to important to take to seriously.
